Inquiry - China

Year 6 -  2008

Integrated Topic - Communication

Term 3

Social Studies Concept

Our experiences in life mean we have beliefs about many ideas and this can change how we interpret events

 Big Idea

Communication may be sent, received and interpreted in different ways.

We will explore how information about Chinese culture and traditions is communicated (sent) to the world and how our life experiences colour how we interpret (receive) that information.

 Purpose

To consider the differences and similarities between New Zealand and Chinese cultures and appreciate the ways in which we communicate aspects of our culture to the world.

 Learning Intentions

 I am learning to

  •  understand aspects of Chinese culture by exploring iconic images that we associate with china.
  •  research a particular aspect of Chinese Culture and present my findings to my class

What do I need to do?

  •  Participate in class discussions about images we associate with China
  • Read the School Journal article ‘Finding China’ and participate in class discussions
  • Create a whole class Venn Diagram showing the differences and similarities between New Zealand and China with respect to food and education
  • Choose a particular aspect of Chinese culture that you would like to know and understand more about
  • Develop at least two key questions you want to answer
  • Research your questions and prepare a presentation for your class. This could be a PowerPoint presentation, a dramatic performance or perhaps a video presentation. You choose how you want to share your discoveries. However the main focus for your presentation should be on sharing quality information and your discoveries. (I already know that you are all very clever with a whole range of multi-media!)

Due Date:

You will need to have your work ready for presentation to your class by the beginning of Week 9 (15 September).

 Reminders about your research

Your Key Questions should be questions that make you really think….avoid simple answer questions.

Don’t use text which has been cut and pasted directly.  Always re-write in your own words.  I will know then that you have synthesised the information you have read.  Wow big words!

Save all of your research findings either in your digital classroom folder or in the back of your Topic Book.

Have fun getting to know China and its people!
